Meghan's former collaborator explores palace romance in upcoming book already set for TV adaptation
Omid Scobie, the royal journalist known for co-authoring Finding Freedom—a book shaped with input from the Duchess of Sussex—is making a shift from royal biography to romantic fiction with his latest project, Royal Spin.
The novel, co-written with Far From the Tree author Robin Benway, will be Scobie’s third royal-themed book following Finding Freedom (2020) and Endgame (2023). This time, however, he trades fact for fiction with a love story set behind the walls of Buckingham Palace. The plot centres on a fictional palace press officer and is described as romantic fiction.
Sphere Fiction has acquired UK and Commonwealth publishing rights, and the book is expected to be released in early 2026. Even ahead of publication, Royal Spin has captured Hollywood’s attention—Universal Television has secured the rights for a screen adaptation.
Blending Scobie’s behind-the-scenes knowledge of palace media operations with Benway’s storytelling expertise, the book promises a unique and imaginative spin on royal life.
Although the Duchess of Sussex’s involvement in Finding Freedom was initially denied, court documents later confirmed she had authorised a friend to speak with Scobie “to prevent any further misrepresentation.”
