Prince William Won’t Be Allowed to Make One Key Change When He Becomes King

Future monarch to modernise reign—while preserving core royal tradition

As Prince William continues his quiet preparation for the throne amid King Charles’ cancer treatment, royal experts reveal that while the Prince of Wales is expected to usher in a more modern monarchy, one crucial element of the Crown will remain unchanged.

Though King Charles has defied tradition with a number of reformative moves during his reign—differing notably from the late Queen Elizabeth II—biographers believe William and Princess Catherine are set to bring an even more contemporary and emotionally engaged approach to royal life.

“They want to be a king and queen who are seen to engage much more with ordinary people in a very relaxed way,” royal author Tom Quinn told Harper’s Bazaar.

Despite this shift in tone, royal biographer Robert Hardman has made clear that one thing William won’t have the authority to change is the monarchy’s central constitutional role.

“When William ascends, that role won’t change—just as it hasn’t changed with King Charles,” Hardman confirmed.

Amid reports suggesting the transition to William’s reign could arrive “sooner than expected,” King Charles has continued to carry out royal duties while balancing treatment and recovery. Palace aides and Queen Camilla have reportedly urged the monarch to take more rest, though he remains committed to his responsibilities.

As William prepares to eventually take the throne, he is expected to follow in both his father’s and grandmother’s footsteps—balancing tradition with reform, but stopping short of altering the monarchy’s constitutional foundation.
