Duke of Edinburgh to Attend Pope Leo XIV’s Inauguration on Behalf of the Crown
King Charles has chosen his brother, Prince Edward, to carry out a significant royal responsibility, selecting him over Prince William to represent the monarchy at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.
The Duke of Edinburgh will officially attend the inaugural Mass in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, May 18, acting on behalf of His Majesty. The appointment was confirmed by royal editor Rebecca English.
The move comes shortly after the unveiling of the King’s new Great Seal of the Realm. While Prince William had previously been sent to the Vatican for the funeral of Pope Francis, this latest decision signals a shift, with Edward now stepping into a prominent ceremonial role.
Just a day earlier, King Charles sent a private message congratulating the newly elected Pope. His decision to dispatch Edward to this key international event reflects the growing trust placed in the Duke of Edinburgh for representing the royal family on the world stage.
