Music icon reveals monarch’s humour and compassion at King’s Trust Gala
Lionel Richie has opened up about his close friendship with King Charles III, revealing a side of the monarch the public seldom sees — one full of humour, warmth, and a genuine passion for helping others.
Speaking at The King’s Trust Global Gala in New York City on May 1, the legendary singer told People magazine:
“People see him as a King, but what is he like as a friend? I will say — a sense of humor — you have no idea. He’s a wonderful, wonderful person who cares so much about people.”
Richie, who became Global Ambassador for The King’s Trust in 2019, has worked alongside the organisation for nearly 40 years. The charity supports vulnerable youth with education and job training programs worldwide.
Reflecting on King Charles’ behind-the-scenes approach, Richie added:
“He has a lot of ideas about what needs to change... You probably won’t hear it all… but he’s a wonderful person, very funny.”
The All Night Long star, who also performed at the King’s coronation last year, said his work with the trust is personal and meaningful:
“What I love to do is take kids that don’t think so and make them believers in themselves... We have to give back, it’s just as simple as that.”
Richie’s comments offer a rare and touching glimpse into the human side of the monarch, far removed from the formality of royal tradition.
