Duke of Sussex criticised for clashing appearance despite recent call for reconciliation
The Duke of Sussex has drawn sharp criticism after making a surprise appearance in Shanghai to attend a sustainable tourism conference—an engagement that coincided with King Charles' high-profile tour of Canada.
Though Harry has previously expressed a desire to repair his strained relationship with the royal family, the timing of his trip has reignited tensions, with some commentators suggesting the move undermines that sentiment.
Royal commentator Richard Eden pointed out the sensitive overlap, stating, “So he got on his jet and racked up a few more air miles to get over to this conference in China… he’s done it when the King is in Canada.”
Speaking on the Palace Confidential podcast, Eden speculated whether the trip may be linked to financial motives. “We know that he and Meghan are very keen to make a lot of money,” he said, noting the potential for business opportunities.
Fellow royal expert Richard Kay echoed concerns, suggesting Harry could have shown greater consideration. “He could have done it on Zoom. Did he really have to travel for a meet-and-greet?” Kay recalled how the Duke had once joined the Diana Awards virtually from a luxurious ski chalet, indicating the trip to China may not have been essential.
Despite Harry’s recent emotional appeals for unity, his actions continue to draw scepticism from those who view his moves as contradictory. Whether King Charles will respond remains to be seen.
