Critics Call Podcast Revelation a ‘Calculated Move’ Lacking Authenticity
Meghan Markle’s attempt to open up about her complex relationship with money and privilege has been met with sharp criticism, with branding experts calling her comments inauthentic and poorly timed.
On a recent episode of her podcast Confessions of a Female Founder, the Duchess of Sussex spoke with Spanx billionaire Sara Blakely and shared that she was raised with a “guilt mentality surrounding having a lot.” She described growing up with a “scarcity mindset,” which, she said, deepened her emotional conflict over wealth and success.
“It’s that feeling you can’t quite put your finger on, like humidity. You can’t see it, but you feel it, and it’s undeniable,” Meghan said, describing the lingering emotional weight many carry, regardless of financial status.
Despite the seemingly personal revelation, branding strategist Doug Eldridge dismissed the moment as “inevitable but terribly inauthentic.” Speaking to Fox News, he argued that the confession felt more like a public relations strategy than genuine vulnerability.
“This was a tactic to try and become more relatable to her audience,” Eldridge claimed. “But you can’t fake authenticity. You either have it or you don’t—and this has been an ongoing struggle for her.”
The backlash comes at a time when Meghan’s public favour continues to waver, with critics questioning the tone and sincerity of her efforts to connect with a broader audience.
