Future King’s early kitchen mishaps charmed the Princess of Wales
Prince William’s path to winning over Catherine began not in a palace, but in the kitchen of their student days at St Andrews.
During a 2019 TV special with Mary Berry, the Princess of Wales fondly recalled how William cooked for her when they were university students—often with mixed results.
"He used to cook all sorts of meals. I think that’s when he was trying to impress me, Mary," Catherine revealed, noting spaghetti Bolognese was a particular favourite.
Michelin-starred chef Tom Shepherd explained the appeal of the dish: "It’s simple, affordable, and you can feed a crowd with just a few ingredients."
William himself once admitted his culinary attempts were far from flawless. "When I was trying to impress Kate, I was trying to cook these amazing fancy dinners. And what would happen is I would burn something, something would overspill, something would catch on fire," he said. "She would be sitting in the background trying to help—and basically taking control."
Fortunately, his efforts won her over despite the occasional kitchen mishap. And while his cooking days may be less frequent now, Catherine revealed: "He sometimes does, actually. He's very good at breakfast."
