Late monarch’s rejection of Sussexes’ proposed royal role now seen as wise as couple pursue commercial ventures
Queen Elizabeth’s concerns over the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal future have been vindicated, royal aides have revealed.
Prior to their 2020 departure from senior royal duties, Harry and Meghan had requested a “half-in, half-out” arrangement, allowing them to earn private income while continuing to represent the monarchy.
However, during an important meeting, the late Queen firmly rejected the proposal, believing it would ultimately damage the institution. Royal aides, cited by Daily Mail’s Rebecca English, explained that the monarch feared the couple might need to endorse commercial products—behaviour deemed inappropriate for working royals.
Now, Meghan has launched her lifestyle brand As Ever, alongside a Netflix series and a podcast with Lemonada, confirming the Queen’s foresight. “Her Late Majesty was nobody’s fool and knew that the chances were, it would all end in disaster,” an insider shared.
Following their move to America, Harry and Meghan relinquished their royal patronages and public funding. Although they retain their ‘HRH’ titles, they are no longer permitted to use them.
The revelation comes shortly after Meghan posted a video of herself and Harry dancing in a hospital room shortly before the birth of their daughter, Lilibet—a name chosen in tribute to the late Queen. The footage sparked controversy online, with many royal commentators and fans describing it as “cringe” and “inappropriate,” particularly given the couple’s emphasis on protecting their privacy.
