Late monarch taught her grandson key rule about public appearances
As the Royal Family prepares to celebrate the King’s official birthday with Trooping the Colour, memories of past balcony moments are resurfacing — including one light-hearted exchange between the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William.
The grand occasion, which brings the Royal Family together at Buckingham Palace, has seen its share of memorable and sometimes awkward moments over the years.
One such instance took place in 2016, when the Queen gave her grandson an impromptu lesson in royal balcony etiquette. During that year’s flypast, Prince William was seen crouching down to speak to his son, Prince George, who was just three years old at the time. Catherine held their daughter, who was then just over a year old, while William attempted to explain the spectacle to George.
However, in doing so, William accidentally blocked the view of the crowds gathered below. The Queen, noticing this, appeared displeased that he was briefly hidden from public sight.
Leaning toward her grandson, she was seen telling him, “Stand up, William. Don’t crouch.” The Prince immediately straightened up, looking slightly embarrassed but amused by the Queen’s gentle but firm reminder.
The charming moment has since become a fondly remembered example of the Queen’s eye for royal protocol — even in family moments.
