Queen hails women’s literary achievements at special fiction prize event
Queen Camilla delighted fans with an unexpected appearance at a special event in Bloomsbury on 11 June, marking 30 years of the Women’s Prize for Fiction.
In remarks shared on the royal family’s official social media accounts, the Queen praised the prize’s founders for bringing the female voice to the forefront of the literary world. Stunning images of the visit accompanied the post.
Ahead of this year’s awards ceremony, Camilla met shortlisted authors, judges, and past winners, and congratulated Bernardine Evaristo, the recipient of the inaugural Women’s Prize Outstanding Contribution Award.
Founder and author Kate Mosse, who had invited the Queen, revealed her appearance was kept secret to surprise attendees: “Nobody knew, which is why people were so surprised. If you’re going to lay on the Queen, if it’s not Beyoncé, it’s got to be the actual Queen.”
During the event, Camilla shared light-hearted moments with the six shortlisted authors, who joked about the competitive spirit among the finalists.
