Monarch steps up efforts to honour Queen Elizabeth II’s equestrian legacy with royal Derby bid
King Charles is on a mission to accomplish what Queen Elizabeth II never could—win the coveted Epsom Derby.
Following the Queen's passing in 2022, the monarch inherited not only her deep-rooted passion for horse racing but also her cherished stable of thoroughbreds. Now, he is focused on continuing her legacy by producing a royal contender for one of the world’s most prestigious races.
Despite her lifelong devotion to the sport, a Derby victory eluded the Queen throughout her historic reign. King Charles now hopes to bridge that gap in the royal racing legacy.
Brian Finch, chairman of Epsom Downs Racecourse, revealed after speaking with the King: “We were talking about him getting a Derby runner and he said, ‘We’re working on it.’ Everybody is hoping the Royal Family will have a Derby winner soon.”
The King’s commitment to equestrian excellence was evident during a recent visit to Newmarket, where he and Queen Camilla toured The National Stud, a renowned hub for British thoroughbred breeding and racing education. The facility welcomes more than 6,000 visitors annually, including children from schools, charities, and community groups.
In a further show of support for local sport and community, the royal couple also met with Ipswich Football Club chairman Mark Ashton at the King Edward VII Memorial Hall.
With his sights now firmly set on the Derby, King Charles seems determined to carry forward his mother’s passion and potentially bring home the prestigious victory that long evaded her.
