Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Take First Steps Toward Royal Reset

Sussexes seek fresh start with King Charles as they look to secure Archie and Lilibet’s royal future

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appear to be entering a new chapter in their relationship with the royal family, taking what's being described as a significant step toward reconciliation with King Charles.

On July 9, senior aides representing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were photographed meeting with King Charles’s communications secretary, Tobyn Andreae, in London. According to reports, the meeting—attended by Harry's chief of staff Meredith Maines and UK spokesperson Liam Maguire—marked a potential turning point in the years-long rift between the Montecito-based couple and the royal household.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told MailOnline that the Sussexes are believed to have initiated the meeting themselves in an effort to restart their connection with the monarchy. “Harry and Meghan reportedly initiated this meeting, as it is clear that any contact with the Royal Family which could have positive connotations is pivotal to them as they have nothing else to offer,” Fitzwilliams stated. “They want to be associated with ‘reconciliation,’ yet previously have been so destructive.”

Sources close to the royal household also suggest the couple's motive is rooted in wanting a more secure future for their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, within the royal framework—possibly signaling an openness to redefining their roles from afar.

However, the aftermath of the meeting has sparked controversy, with details quickly leaking to the media. Fitzwilliams noted the move was “extremely controversial,” raising questions about trust and internal communication. “The motives of both parties, who knew, who leaked it, and whether Prince William was aware—as he obviously should have been—are currently matters which are hotly debated,” he said.

While no official comment has been made by Buckingham Palace or the Sussex camp, the meeting marks a notable shift. Whether it leads to a full royal reset remains to be seen, but the signs suggest Harry and Meghan may be serious about opening a new, more cooperative chapter with the monarchy—for themselves and for their children.
