Prince Harry Strengthens Diana's Legacy with Renewed Support for Landmine Mission

Duke of Sussex honored in Angola as he continues late mother’s humanitarian work

Prince Harry has reaffirmed his commitment to a cause championed by his late mother, Princess Diana, as he took part in a symbolic landmine walk with The HALO Trust during his visit to Angola on Tuesday.

The Duke of Sussex, who has been patron of the landmine-clearing charity since 2019, retraced Diana's historic steps by walking through demined terrain—a powerful tribute to her groundbreaking efforts in 1997 to bring global attention to the dangers of landmines.

Following the walk, Harry took part in a high-level private meeting with Angola's President João Lourenço. The HALO Trust's CEO, James Cowan, shared details of the encounter in a statement via People magazine.

“It was an honor to have an audience with His Excellency President Lourenço today alongside Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, to discuss HALO’s continued demining efforts in Angola,” Cowan said. He praised the president's ongoing commitment, revealing a renewed three-year contract to further support the mission. “Our partnership is strengthened and renewed, and we are grateful to President Lourenço for his leadership on this critical issue.”

Princess Diana famously visited Huambo, Angola in January 1997, walking through a live minefield and drawing worldwide attention to the urgent need for international landmine bans. Her bold gesture became one of the most iconic moments of her humanitarian work. Tragically, she died later that year in a car crash in Paris at the age of 36.

Now, nearly three decades later, Prince Harry is carrying forward his mission with deep personal dedication, ensuring that his legacy continues to make an impact in communities still affected by the lasting scars of conflict.
