Royal couple seen as ideal figureheads to represent Britain ahead of Trump's historic return visit to the UK
As the United States prepares for its 250th anniversary of independence in 2026, the Prince and Princess of Wales may take center stage in marking this major transatlantic milestone.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams believes the historic occasion offers a fitting opportunity for Catherine and William to embody Britain's soft power through a blend of diplomacy and royal symbolism. Their growing popularity—particularly in the United States—positions them as strong candidates to represent the monarchy during this momentous celebration.
"The monarchy is one of Britain's greatest assets on the world stage," Fitzwilliams noted, adding that the couple's youth and global appeal make them well-suited to lead the royal presence during America's semiquincentennial events.
This suggestion coincides with preparations for former U.S. President Donald Trump's anticipated second state visit to the UK this September. The visit will mark a historic return, making him the first elected American president in modern times to receive such an honor twice. His first state visit was hosted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2019.
According to Fitzwilliams, Catherine and William could also play a “pivotal” role during Trump’s visit. While King Charles and Queen Camilla remain possible participants in the 2026 commemorations, I have suggested a more youthful royal image might be preferred. “I would have thought that’s something for William and Kate,” he said.
With Prince William topping U.S. royal popularity polls and interest in Catherine steadily rising, the couple appear well-placed to step into the spotlight—strengthening UK-U.S. ties during two defining events on the diplomatic calendar.
