Future King celebrates Wales’ women’s football team ahead of milestone match against the Netherlands
Prince William has shared an emotional message as Wales prepares for a landmark moment in its football history — the team’s first-ever appearance at a major women’s tournament.
Ahead of Wales' Euro 2025 opener against the Netherlands in Lucerne on Saturday, July 5, the Prince of Wales offered his support through a personal note posted on the official social media account he shares with Catherine.
“Best of luck to Wales as they make their Women’s Euro debut,” the message read. “A proud and historical moment for Welsh football. Pob lwc! – W.”
The Welsh team, the lowest-ranked side in Group D, heads into the tournament as the clear underdogs, but with hopes of defying expectations. Their opponents, the Netherlands, are former European champions and among the favourites this year.
Head coach Rhian Wilkinson encouraged her team to embrace the challenge, urging them to “show the world who we are.” Wales forward Jess Fishlock echoed the sentiment, saying the team would use their underdog status as motivation.
Wales has already shown flashes of promise this year, including two draws against Sweden, and their entry into the competition marks a significant milestone for the country.
Meanwhile, Prince William, who is also President of the Football Association, recently greeted the England women’s team as they arrived in Switzerland to defend their title.
While England and the Netherlands carry strong tournament records, all eyes are now on Wales as they begin their first journey on the European stage.
