Fluent Welsh message and matchday visits highlight royal’s deep commitment to the game
Prince William revealed a lesser-known skill this weekend as he cheered on the Wales women’s national team ahead of their historic UEFA Women’s Euros debut. In a touching social media post, the Prince of Wales shared his support in fluent Welsh — a rare gesture that impressed royal watchers and football fans alike.
“Best of luck to Wales as they make their Women’s Euros debut. A proud and historical moment for Welsh football,” he wrote, closing with the Welsh phrase “Pob lwc!” and his initial, “W”.
Despite the Prince’s encouragement, Wales struggled in their opening match, suffering a 0-3 loss to the Netherlands in the European championships.
Earlier in the week, William visited St. George’s Park in Burton upon Trent to meet with England’s Lionesses ahead of their own high-stakes match against France. The Lionesses put up a strong fight, scoring once but ultimately losing 1-2 after a decisive goal from Sandy Baltimore.
The Prince, a long-standing football enthusiast and patron of the Football Association, has long been a regular at major football events. In April, he was spotted in France alongside his son, Prince George, cheering for Aston Villa during an intense Champions League quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
The next chapter in the tournament unfolds this Sunday when Wales and England face off in what promises to be an electrifying showdown in St. Gallen.
