Future Queen surprises paratroopers with visit to cultural celebration after Colchester outing
Just days after her emotional public update on her health, Princess Catherine made an unexpected appearance at a military event, delighting paratroopers and charity members alike.
On July 2, following her official visit to the RHS Wellbeing Garden at Colchester Hospital, the Princess of Wales made a quiet stop at the 2 PARA Cultural Day—a celebration hosted by the Parachute Regiment to honor the battalion's diverse cultural heritage.
Photos from the unannounced engagement, shared by the charity Support Our Paras, captured Catherine in warm spirits as she mingled with paratroopers and even cradled a small puppy. Dressed in the same tweed blazer, striped shirt, and brown trousers she wore earlier in the day, the Princess appeared relaxed and cheerful during the informal gathering.
Support Our Paras shared their appreciation on social media, writing: "The 2 PARA Cultural Day is an opportunity for paratroopers to come together and celebrate the many cultural groups that make up the battalion. We were delighted to be able to talk about our work with those in attendance, which included HRH The Princess of Wales."
Though the visit was not listed in the official Court Circular—making it an unofficial addition to her day—it highlights Catherine's strong personal connection to Britain’s armed forces.
The Princess holds a number of military roles, including Colonel of the Irish Guards, Royal Honorary Air Commodore of the Air Cadets, and Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm. She was also appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards and Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Coningsby in 2023.
This surprise appearance reflects Catherine’s continued dedication to service, even as she navigates her own health journey. With her trademark warmth and resilience, the future Queen once again proved her deep bond with the armed forces and the communities they serve.
