Grenada Removes Oath to King Charles in Historic Change

Shift comes as new book reignites scrutiny over Andrew's behavior

Grenada has formally ended its oath of allegiance to King Charles, a move seen as part of a wider trend among Commonwealth nations rethinking their ties to the monarchy.

The change, introduced last Friday to coincide with Emancipation Day celebrations, means state officials now pledge loyalty solely to Grenada rather than “His Majesty King Charles the Third, His Heirs and Successors.” Emancipation Day marks the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1834.

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell had already signaled in 2023 his intention to steer the island toward republican status, following Barbados’s example in 2021.

The development comes as The Rise and Fall of the Yorks, a new biography by Andrew Lownie, makes fresh claims about Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson. The book alleges tensions within the royal family have been fueled by Andrew's extravagant lifestyle, controversial friendships, secretive business dealings, and alleged inappropriate remarks about Catherine — an accusation the author says remains unexplained.
