The Duchess of Sussex opens up about her bond with the monarchy
Meghan Markle has offered a rare glimpse into her feelings toward the royals, describing them as “my family” in a message that surprised many. Her words come just as Harry is expected to reunite with King Charles during his upcoming trip to the UK.
The Duchess of Sussex, who stepped back from royal duties alongside Harry in 2020, spoke candidly about the significance of her title and what it means to her children. Despite leaving life as a senior royal, Meghan made it clear that she still values her connection to the family she was welcomed into by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
In her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, she recalled a conversation with her friend Mindy Kaling where she reflected on taking on the name Sussex after her marriage. “I share my [‘Sussex’] name with my children,” Meghan said. “I didn’t know how meaningful it would be, but it means so much to say, ‘This is our family name!’”
Her comments underline that she sees her role as Duchess of Sussex as central to her identity and her family’s. Speaking more recently on The Circuit with Emily Chang, Meghan clarified that while some still refer to her as “Markle,” her legal name is “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.” She added that “Sussex works as our family name and it’s the name we share with our children.”
For Meghan, the values tied to her marriage and her shared identity with Harry and their children matter more than labels. Her words suggest she has no intention of distancing herself from her title or from the royal family connection it represents.
