The Prince and Princess of Wales choose to fund their own home renovations
Prince William and Catherine are steering clear of a misstep that once landed Harry and Meghan in hot water. The couple has decided to cover the costs of renovating their new Forest Lodge home out of their own pocket, rather than relying on public funds.
The move is seen as a deliberate contrast to Harry and Meghan’s renovation of Frogmore Cottage, which was initially funded with taxpayer money. Despite the extensive work carried out, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent little time living there before stepping back from royal duties. The property was eventually reclaimed by King Charles.
According to former royal butler Grant Harold, the Prince and Princess of Wales are well aware of the public sensitivity surrounding royal spending. Speaking to GB News, he noted: “At the moment, the costs of the Royal Family are being looked at constantly, especially with the cost of living. William and Catherine are aware of that. They don’t want the public paying for anything. They’ve got the money to pay for it, so they want to show that they’re doing it themselves.”
Forest Lodge, an eight-bedroom estate in Windsor Great Park, will become the Wales family’s permanent home. The couple is paying market rent and handling renovations privately, underscoring their intention to take a more careful and considered approach. The family is expected to settle into the property by the end of 2025, marking a move from their current residence at Adelaide Cottage.
