King Charles’s godson faces dilemma as brothers’ rift looms over baptism
The deepening rift between Prince William and Harry is once again casting a shadow over royal friendships—this time involving one of their closest allies.
Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster and King Charles’s godson, recently welcomed his first child, daughter Cosima, with wife Olivia Henson in July 2025. Plans are now underway for the baptism, but the long-running feud between the two royal brothers could complicate what should be a joyful occasion.
According to reports, Grosvenor would like both William and Harry to be involved, but he is said to be “still considering” whether to ask Harry to serve as a godfather. A decision regarding William has already been made.
The duke has long been close to both brothers—he is one of the few mutual friends to be chosen as a godparent by each, standing as godfather to Prince George and Prince Archie. However, tensions between the siblings have strained even his role in their lives.
Last year, William was an usher at Grosvenor’s high-profile wedding, while Harry and Meghan Markle declined to attend. At the time, a mutual friend told The Times, “It’s incredibly sad it has come to this. Hugh is one of the very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both.”
With speculation mounting, some believe Grosvenor may ultimately sideline both brothers in order to protect his daughter’s baptism from being overshadowed by royal family drama.
Reports suggest William and Harry’s relationship has remained frosty for the past five years, with no sign of reconciliation.
