Future king strays from royal 'no comment' tradition after Oprah interview
William has rarely spoken publicly about Harry since their relationship soured, but one moment after the Sussexes' 2021 Oprah interview marked a notable break from royal protocol.
As King Charles focuses on cancer treatment, the Prince of Wales has taken on more responsibilities, being prepared to step in “at a moment's notice” if required. According to Express UK royal editor Emily Ferguson, William is well aware of the “no comment” tradition strongly upheld by their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. She noted that the late monarch preferred to make statements subtly, through her clothing and jewelry, rather than verbal remarks.
However, in his first public appearance after the Oprah interview, William was asked by a reporter whether he had spoken to his brother. He replied, “Not yet, but I will,” before firmly adding, “We are very much not a racist family.”
Royal experts have said Charles has adopted a similar low-profile approach to criticism, avoiding public confrontation despite Harry's recent allegations. Ferguson added that while “staying silent” can be a smart PR strategy, William's comments showed that it is not always easy to follow.
