Former president says monarch prioritised trade talks over other matters
Donald Trump has shared details from his recent meeting with King Charles, revealing that the monarch was most interested in trade between the United States and the United Kingdom.
Speaking about their discussions, the former president said:
“I think he was more interested in trade. You know he loves the environment too, he likes to talk about the environment, but he was more interested in trade than anything else.”
Trump added that talks on a potential trade deal are ongoing and expressed confidence it would benefit both nations. “We’re working a trade deal with the UK which is going to be a good deal for both, and we’re working it with the Prime Minister and his various representatives, and I think it’s going to be a great deal for both.”
He noted that the two spent considerable time together, covering a wide range of subjects. However, he did not disclose whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were mentioned, despite reports of Harry allegedly reaching out to his father over his US visa situation.
Trump praised the King warmly, saying: “I knew him as Prince Charles originally, and now he’s King Charles, and the people love him in this country. He went through pretty tough stuff medically, and he’s doing great. He’s just a great person, I’ve known him for a long time, always said the same thing, he’s a tremendous man who really stepped into a very tough position.”
He also reflected on the challenge of following Queen Elizabeth, remarking: “Having to follow Queen Elizabeth is very... she’s got the all-time record probably, always will have, but she was in there for like 70 years or something, and to follow that is pretty tough. She was really beloved.”
The State Visit itself has been described as a grand occasion, with the Trumps considered gracious guests throughout their time in the UK.
