King Charles Shares Deep Sorrow Over Hurricane Melissa’s Destruction

The monarch expresses sympathy for Jamaica and the Caribbean, recalling his long-held affection for the island.

King Charles has voiced his heartbreak over the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, which has left a trail of destruction across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.

In a message released through Buckingham Palace on October 29, the 76-year-old monarch said he and Queen Camilla were “deeply concerned and profoundly saddened” by the “catastrophic damage” from the Category 4 storm.

“As we continue to follow the situation closely, our anxious thoughts are with all those who have been so cruelly affected by this awful storm,” His Majesty said. “Above all, our most heartfelt sympathy is with the families, friends, and loved ones of those who have tragically lost their lives.”

Reflecting on his enduring bond with Jamaica, the King recalled his first visit more than fifty years ago while serving in the Royal Navy. “Jamaica is a land for which I have had the greatest affection ever since I first visited the island while serving on the West Indies station,” he wrote.

Charles also praised the strength and unity of the Jamaican people, saying that no disaster could “break her people’s enduring spirit of strength, solidarity, and steadfastness.” He commended the courage of those working tirelessly to help, adding: “I have the greatest appreciation for the efforts of the emergency services, frontline workers, and volunteers who are supporting rescue and recovery efforts across the island.”

The King concluded with a reflection on the need to address climate challenges, calling the storm “a dreadful reminder of the urgent need to restore balance and harmony with nature.”

He ended his message with a note of compassion: “Our special prayers are with you all.”
