King Charles to Join Pope in Prayer as Parliament Targets End of Andrew’s Dukedom

MP Rachael Maskell pushes new law that could let the King formally remove royal titles

King Charles is set to gain fresh authority in dealing with the aftermath of Andrew’s controversies, as new legislation heads to the House of Commons that could allow him to officially strip the Duke of York of his title.

The bill, introduced by Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central, proposes to give the monarch the right to remove royal titles on his own initiative, on the recommendation of a joint parliamentary committee, or at the request of the titleholder themselves.

Maskell, who had the Labour whip suspended earlier this year, said it was time for Parliament to act. “The Duke of York title may no longer be used, but it has not been removed. My short Bill, The Removal of Titles Bill, will fix this,” she explained, urging cross-party support.

If passed, the legislation could provide a clear legal process for removing titles that have become controversial, marking a significant shift in how the monarchy and Parliament handle royal accountability.

Andrew stepped back from public duties following scrutiny over his ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein. While he has relinquished several roles and honours, he remains a prince as the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Meanwhile, King Charles is expected to meet and pray with Pope Francis, a gesture seen by many as part of his effort to guide the monarchy into a new era—one defined by transparency and moral authority.
