The Duchess of Sussex’s seemingly harmless social media post during Paris Fashion Week has reportedly reignited tensions within the royal family.
Meghan Markle has found herself in hot water after a video she shared from Paris Fashion Week drew strong reactions from both the public and within the royal family.
In the clip, Meghan appeared relaxed, filming herself on her way back to her hotel while passing a bridge. What seemed like an innocent post quickly became controversial as online users accused her of being insensitive — believing she was near the site of Princess Diana’s tragic car crash in 1997.
Although it was later clarified that Meghan was not at the Pont de l’Alma tunnel, where Diana’s accident occurred, but instead near Pont Alexandre III and Pont des Invalides, the damage had been done. Many were still angered, and according to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, Prince William was among those upset.
Fitzwilliams told OK! Magazine that Harry was “unable to shield Meghan from the repercussions of her mistake,” adding, “It cannot be undone. If an average person posted such a video, it wouldn’t matter. But every single thing Meghan does is scrutinised, by friend or foe.”
Reports suggest that William viewed the act as “ill-judged and self-centred,” regardless of Meghan’s intentions. Meanwhile, Harry is said to be dismayed by the situation, as tensions between the brothers remain unresolved nearly three decades after their mother’s death.
Both William and Harry continue to honour Princess Diana’s legacy through their charitable work — making Meghan’s misstep during her time in Paris all the more painful for those still carrying that shared grief.
