The Duchess of Sussex explains why she limits social media interaction to preserve her wellbeing and create a positive space.
Meghan Markle has shared how she manages her mental health in the face of constant public scrutiny, revealing that setting boundaries on social media has been key to her wellbeing.
Speaking at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington D.C., the Duchess of Sussex discussed her approach to online presence and why she has chosen to disable comments on her personal Instagram and on her lifestyle brand, As Ever.
“There are certain things that I have done just for my own self-preservation,” Meghan explained. “It’s not only about protecting myself, but also the people who work with me and those who are incredibly supportive.”
She said the decision was about fostering a healthier, more positive environment. “A lot of people who visit my page aren’t looking for negativity. By turning off comments, I’m not only protecting myself but also my supporters,” she added.
While she admitted that restricting comments limits direct engagement, Meghan said she prefers to focus on the “groundswell of support” she receives. “That’s what I feel the most, and that’s what I appreciate,” she said.
The Duchess described the move as “a choice” about how to build meaningful community connections, noting that it shapes how she wants to “show up in the world.”
During the discussion, Meghan also touched on her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, calling it “a year of learns.” She hinted that changes could be coming to the show’s format, adding, “How can I give you a recipe in two minutes? And where can I share that with you?”
Through her remarks, Meghan made it clear that self-preservation, both personally and professionally, remains central to how she navigates life in the public eye.
