Prince Harry and Meghan Markle looked united as they walked hand-in-hand down the red carpet in New York City on Thursday to receive an honour at the Project Healthy Minds’ World Mental Health Day Gala. The appearance came just days after Meghan’s surprise solo outing at Paris Fashion Week.
However, the trip took an unexpected turn when Meghan faced backlash for filming an Instagram Story while passing through Paris. Viewers accused her of being disrespectful to the memory of her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, after noticing the video appeared to have been taken near the site of the Princess’s fatal car crash.
Although it was later clarified that Meghan was actually near Pont Alexandre III and Pont des Invalides—not the exact crash location—many still found the video in poor taste. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told OK! that Harry was likely “horrified and extremely angry,” describing the moment as “a very bad mistake.”
“He would be aghast, because even though it wasn’t intentional, it connects to the most traumatic period of his life,” Fitzwilliams said, adding that Meghan “simply cannot afford to behave like that” knowing how much it affects her husband.
Some royal watchers claimed to spot subtle tension between the couple during their New York appearance, possibly hinting at private strain. Fitzwilliams acknowledged that Meghan’s filming was “clearly a mistake” but still called it “grossly insensitive,” noting that such moments “carry weight.”
Whether this incident will cause lasting friction between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remains uncertain.
