Dame Mary Berry praises the royal couple’s enduring bond and warmth, both in private and public life.
Prince William may be known for his sense of duty, but according to Dame Mary Berry, his real strength lies in how he supports Catherine behind the scenes.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, the 90-year-old baking icon shared her admiration for the couple’s relationship. She described how the Duke of Cambridge often gives “a little arm around the back, encouraging her,” a gesture that speaks volumes about their partnership. “He’s obviously immensely proud of her,” Berry said. “They give their life to all of us.”
Berry, who has known the couple for over a decade through their shared work with Child Bereavement UK, praised William’s empathy and commitment to understanding people’s lives across the country. “He’s such a wonderful man,” she added. “He wants to find out about everyone. He lives for all of us. I admire him. He sets an example.”
The celebrated cook also reflected on their shared experiences of loss. William lost his mother at a young age, and Berry lost her son in a car accident—something that, she said, deepens her respect for the couple’s compassion and sincerity.
Berry fondly recalled filming A Very Berry Christmas in 2019, where she and William went head-to-head in a lighthearted roulade-making contest. Both desserts were declared equally delicious, but the memory, she said, was even sweeter for the warmth and kindness shown by the royal couple.
Their connection has continued over the years. For Berry’s 90th birthday, William sent her a heartfelt note calling her “a true national treasure” and joking about the pressure on whoever baked her cake. His words moved her to tears.
Through quiet gestures, public service, and genuine care, Dame Mary Berry’s stories reveal what many already sense—William and Catherine’s partnership is grounded in mutual respect, warmth, and enduring love.
