The royal couple spotlight Welsh talent as Kensington Palace releases a bilingual good-luck note
Prince William and Catherine sent their best wishes to nominees ahead of this year’s BAFTA Cymru Awards, showing their continued support for the Welsh arts community.
The Prince of Wales, who serves as BAFTA’s president, appeared via video message during Sunday’s ceremony at ICC Wales in Newport. The clip was recorded during his visit to Bad Wolf Studios in Cardiff last month. Before the event began, Kensington Palace posted a note on social media in both English and Welsh: “Good luck to all the Nominees at tonight’s @baftacymru Awards!” followed by “Pob lwc heno i'r holl Enwebeion yng Ngwobrau @baftacymru!”
Hosted by Welsh TV presenter Owain Wyn Evans, the 34th BAFTA Cymru Awards celebrated film and television talent across 17 categories, along with two special honours. Lost Boys and Fairies led the night with five wins, while The Golden Cobra and Mr Burton each received two awards.
In his recorded address, William praised the UK’s creative industry, saying, “The screen arts are a vital part of our cultural landscape, enriching both the UK’s storytelling heritage and our economy.” He highlighted BAFTA’s bursary programme for helping young people take their first steps in the industry, adding, “Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not—and that’s where BAFTA plays such an important role.”
He closed by thanking Film Cymru Wales, Screen Alliance Wales, and all who support BAFTA’s work, before congratulating the night’s winners and wishing everyone a good evening.
