As Republic pushes for private prosecution, sources say the royal has been told to “change his surroundings”
Prince Andrew may soon leave the United Kingdom as pressure mounts over renewed calls for legal action. The former Duke of York has once again become the focus of anti-monarchist groups, with campaigners using his scandals to criticise the royal family and its privileges.
The group Republic has enlisted legal experts to explore ways of pursuing accountability, suggesting a private prosecution may be necessary. Its CEO, Graham Smith, expressed frustration with authorities, saying, “If not us, then who? It’s a damning reflection on the UK’s justice system, police, and politicians—let alone the king and heir—that we have to step in ourselves.”
Smith argued that many people rightly believe the royals are not held to the same legal standards as others, calling equality before the law “a basic tenet of democracy.”
This renewed scrutiny follows reports that the royal family has asked Andrew to vacate the Royal Lodge, his longtime residence. A palace insider said he’s been advised to “change his surroundings” and focus on his well-being amid the stress surrounding his family’s reputation.
The potential charges being examined include sexual assault, corruption, and misconduct in public office. Andrew, 65, has repeatedly denied all allegations, and the Metropolitan Police previously concluded that the evidence did not justify further investigation.
Smith, however, maintains that “there is strong enough evidence to warrant a serious inquiry.” He added, “Authorities and politicians seem eager to look the other way. The truth must come out, and justice must be seen to be done.”
As pressure builds, reports suggest Andrew is considering leaving the country to escape both the legal spotlight and growing public backlash.
