The royal calls for unity and courage in tackling the global climate crisis
Prince William marked a defining moment in his public life as he addressed the COP30 UN Climate Conference in Belém, Brazil, on November 6, 2025, representing his father, King Charles.
Arriving in the Amazon city after a busy few days in Rio de Janeiro for the Earthshot Prize 2025, the Prince opened his speech in Portuguese, warmly greeting the hosts: “Bom Dia! Muito obrigado Presidente Lula e Governador Barbalho pelas calorosas boas-vindas a Belém do Pará.”
In his speech, William spoke passionately about the responsibility of this generation to protect the natural world for future ones. “Our children and grandchildren will stand on the shoulders of our collective action,” he said. “Let us use these inspiring surroundings here in the heart of the Amazon to rise to meet this moment, not with hesitation, but with courage. Not with division, but with collaboration. Not with delay, but with decisive commitment.”
He praised Indigenous peoples and local communities for their long-standing efforts in protecting the planet, urging global leaders to “walk forward together” in building a future where “every child inherits a world of prosperity, not peril.”
Highlighting the urgency of the climate crisis, William reminded attendees that “our children and grandchildren are watching and hoping.” He reflected on the floods, fires, and droughts that struck Brazil two years ago, recalling his visit with families still recovering from devastating loss. “One resident told me how the river that once brought life to the town had become a source of fear. Their resilience is deeply moving,” he said.
William also reflected on his own journey and his father’s lifelong advocacy for environmental harmony. “I grew up with my father, the King, talking about the power of nature and the importance of balance in the natural world—a subject he has championed for over five decades,” he shared. “It is a privilege to represent him here today.”
Closing his remarks, the Prince spoke about his enduring belief in “urgent optimism,” expressing confidence that humanity’s creativity and determination can overcome even the toughest challenges.
Kensington Palace later released a striking video showcasing Brazil’s breathtaking landscapes and moments from the Prince’s visit, underscoring his continued commitment to environmental leadership and collaboration on a global scale.
