Senior royals prepare for an uncomfortable reunion at a christening marked by tension
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is bracing for an uncomfortable moment as King Charles and Prince William are expected to keep their distance during the christening of his granddaughter, Athena, at the Chapel Royal.
Reports say the gathering will be the first significant family event Andrew and Sarah Ferguson have attended since losing their royal titles and being asked to leave Royal Lodge. Insiders describe the atmosphere as tense, with observers expecting careful planning to limit awkward encounters.
Royal commentator Grant Harrold explained that the christening of their daughters’ child brings the wider family together, which means the King, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Catherine are all likely to attend. He noted that Andrew, as the baby’s grandfather, will still have an important place at the event, even as speculation grows about the strength of his relationship with their daughters.
Harrold said the situation remains difficult for the King and Prince William, who made the decision to remove Andrew’s titles. He believes some senior royals may choose to keep their distance, with discussions likely happening ahead of time to prevent any tension on the day.
Even so, Charles and William remain close to their daughters and are expected to take part in the occasion despite the strain surrounding Andrew’s presence.
