The Duchess and Harry have long raised concerns about the harm young people face online. They welcomed Australia’s move to pressure platforms into removing underage users or face major fines. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese framed it as a moment when families are reclaiming control from large tech companies.
In their statement, the couple said the policy sends a clear message that children’s minds should not be treated as products. They noted that the ban gives young people much needed space in their childhoods but does not resolve the wider problems built into social media.
They described the ban as a practical step to prevent immediate harm but said it acts only as a temporary fix. They argued that the core issue lies in platforms designed for rapid growth rather than safety.
Harry and Meghan added that they hope this marks the beginning of a broader shift in how society holds tech companies accountable. The pair founded the Archewell Foundation in 2020 after settling in the United States.
