King Charles Faces Fresh Criticism as York Scandal Renews Questions

Royal biographer says monarchy still resists transparency despite mounting pressure

King Charles is facing renewed scrutiny over his approach to modernising the monarchy, as fresh controversy surrounding the York family puts long-standing concerns back in the spotlight.

The debate has been reignited by royal biographer Andrew Lownie, writing on Substack, where he argues the Royal Family is approaching a critical moment. According to Lownie, the institution now stands at what he describes as a “tipping point,” with growing pressure to adapt to modern expectations.

What stands out, he suggests, is where that pressure is coming from. Rather than critics or political opponents, calls for reform are increasingly being voiced by mainstream broadcasters, journalists, and members of the Royal Rota, those traditionally closest to royal reporting.

Despite this, Lownie argues the response from the monarchy has been underwhelming. He claims the institution continues to fall short when it comes to meaningful change, even amid heightened public attention in recent months.

Reflecting on the late Queen’s reign, Lownie notes she appeared resistant to reform. However, he is more critical of King Charles, pointing out that after decades preparing for the role, there has still been little effort to align the monarchy with the expectations of a modern democratic system.

He describes recent actions as largely superficial, suggesting there has been no serious move towards greater transparency, financial accountability, or external scrutiny.

The ongoing issues linked to the York family, he adds, have sharpened public focus but are not the root cause. Instead, they highlight a deeper, systemic reluctance within the Royal Family to accept the level of oversight expected of other powerful institutions.

Lownie concludes that reform remains both possible and necessary. However, he warns that if Charles fails to act, his reign could ultimately be defined by a missed opportunity to bring meaningful change to the monarchy.
