Princess Diana Once Reflected on Feeling Like a ‘Good Shelf Product’

Princess Diana once opened up about the importance of self-love and self-awareness, admitting that many of the struggles people face stem from feeling unloved.

The former Princess of Wales, and first wife of King Charles, shared these thoughts during her well-known BBC Panorama interview in the 1990s with Martin Bashir, where she discussed her humanitarian work and the emotional challenges of life in the public eye.

During the conversation, Diana reflected on what she believed was one of the biggest problems in modern society. She said that many people suffer from a deep sense of being unloved and explained that offering care and compassion to others mattered greatly to her. Diana noted that even giving love for a short moment could make a difference, adding that she was always willing and happy to do so.

Elsewhere in the interview, Diana spoke about the intense interest the public had in her life. She admitted it took years to understand why people were so fascinated by her. At first, she believed the attention was largely due to the work her husband had done before their marriage and during their relationship.

However, as time passed, Diana realised that public fascination with her had grown far beyond that. She described how, over the years, she sometimes felt like “a good product that sits on a shelf and sells well,” suggesting that many people benefitted from her popularity.

Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. She left behind two sons, Prince William and Harry, who continue to carry forward parts of her charitable legacy today.
