PR expert explains why the Duke of Sussex may see silence as the safest path during a sensitive royal controversy
Questions have been raised about why Prince Harry has remained quiet regarding the controversy surrounding his uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. While many reports speculate about his motives, one public relations expert believes the situation leaves him with very little room to speak openly.
PR expert and talent manager Dermot McNamara recently shared her view with The Mirror, suggesting that Harry’s decision to stay silent may be a careful attempt to avoid making an already delicate situation worse.
According to McNamara, even though Prince Harry was never implicated in the scandal, he may still find himself facing questions about it. That, she explained, places him in a complicated position. Speaking publicly could draw him deeper into the controversy, yet saying nothing at all may also invite criticism.
She noted that the Duke of Sussex likely understands the risks involved in commenting on such a sensitive matter. From her perspective, the safest approach for him may be to remain silent while still offering private support to the wider family.
McNamara also pointed out that Prince Harry has been open about his personal experiences within the royal family before, particularly in his memoir Spare. However, she stressed that the current situation involves other people and extremely serious allegations, making it a subject that requires caution and restraint.
Reflecting on Harry’s past comments about royal life, McNamara said he was justified in sharing his own story. She believes there may have been much he chose not to reveal publicly, even while discussing the pressures he faced.
She also touched on the long-standing dynamic between Harry and his brother, explaining that their relationship has always involved an imbalance because William is the future king while Harry has often been viewed as the “spare.”
In her view, Harry’s willingness to speak out about his own experiences may have shifted that dynamic slightly. Although it may have caused discomfort at times, she suggested that challenging an imbalance can sometimes be necessary in order for a relationship to change.
