Kanye West, now known as Ye, could soon face another setback as concerns grow
over whether his upcoming concert in France will go ahead.
The rapper’s prospects appear increasingly uncertain following reports that
French authorities may take steps similar to those recently taken in the
United Kingdom. His scheduled performance in Marseille on June 11 is now under
scrutiny as officials consider possible action.
According to AFP, a source close to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the
minister is determined to explore legal avenues that could lead to a ban
before the planned concert takes place.
Opposition to the show has already been voiced at the local level. On March 4,
the Mayor of Marseille publicly criticised the idea of the performance in a
post on X, stating that the city should not become a platform for messages
associated with hatred or extremist views. The mayor added that the rapper
would not be welcome at the Vélodrome stadium.
The situation comes shortly after the United Kingdom barred Ye from entering
the country, forcing the cancellation of his planned appearance at Wireless
Festival. In a statement posted on Instagram, the festival confirmed the
decision, saying the event had no choice but to cancel following the UK Home
Office’s ruling.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also weighed in on the controversy, saying the
artist should not have been invited to perform.
The fallout has extended beyond event organisers. Major sponsor Pepsi had
already withdrawn its support earlier, adding to the growing list of
complications surrounding Ye’s planned appearances in Europe.
