King Charles and the 2027 Invictus Games: Could Prince Harry’s Bold Plan Work?

King Charles and the 2027 Invictus Games: Could Prince Harry’s Bold Plan Work?

The Duke of Sussex reportedly hopes his father will open the Birmingham event, but the ongoing royal rift leaves the outcome uncertain.

Prince Harry is said to be hoping for a major royal moment when the Invictus Games return to the UK in 2027. According to recent reports, the Duke of Sussex would like King Charles to open the Games in Birmingham, marking the event’s first appearance in Britain since it was founded in 2014.

The idea would place the King on the global stage at an event that Harry himself created to honour wounded and injured service personnel. But with tensions between Harry and the royal family still unresolved, many observers question whether such a plan could realistically happen.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams recently addressed the speculation while speaking to Fox News Digital. He noted that Harry’s camp is believed to be hopeful that the King will officially open the Games.

However, Fitzwilliams also pointed out that the situation is far from straightforward. The strained relationship between Harry and the royal household, along with a lingering lack of trust, could make any collaboration difficult.

Another major factor is security. Reports suggest Harry has made it clear he does not plan to return to the UK without full protection for himself, Meghan Markle, and their children. Without that assurance, any visit for the Games could be unlikely.

Fitzwilliams also referenced the ongoing tensions between Harry and his brother, Prince William. He described the division within the family as serious, adding that the couple’s use of their royal connections has drawn criticism from some royal watchers.

Even so, he acknowledged that the proposal itself is a bold one, and the King’s response could carry real significance for the future of the family relationship.

The rift between Harry and the royal family developed over several years. It followed a series of high-profile interviews, Harry’s memoir in which he discussed private family matters, and a Netflix documentary that examined the couple’s experience after stepping away from royal duties.

Despite that history, there are signs that reconciliation may still be possible. Reports suggest quiet efforts are being made to ease tensions.

Part of that effort involves Harry’s legal challenge against the UK Home Office. He previously took the government to court over a 2018 decision that removed his automatic taxpayer-funded security after he stepped back from royal life.

Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner believes time and distance could help improve relations. Speaking to Fox News Digital, he suggested that if both sides are willing to reconnect, there may still be a positive future ahead.

For now, the question remains open. Whether King Charles will step forward to open the 2027 Invictus Games could depend not only on logistics and security, but also on how the royal family chooses to handle one of its most complicated relationships.
