Royal expert says a simple step toward reconciliation could strengthen the monarchy’s public image
King Charles has been told he could significantly improve the monarchy’s public image if he chooses to address his strained relationship with his youngest son, Harry.
The monarch, who is preparing for an upcoming visit to the United States, is reportedly unlikely to meet the Duke of Sussex during the trip. However, royal commentator Emma Mackenzie believes the situation presents a valuable opportunity for the King to change course and send a message of unity.
Writing for the Mirror, Mackenzie argues that the security concerns surrounding Harry and his family should be taken seriously. She notes that despite the ongoing tensions, Harry was born into the Royal Family and that reality will never change. According to her, the growing calls suggesting he should feel unwelcome in his home country appear harsh and unnecessarily punitive.
Mackenzie suggests that the King and the future monarch could gain what she describes as “golden PR points” if they make a public effort to repair the relationship. Showing a willingness to reconcile, she says, would demonstrate that even amid highly public family disagreements, the monarchy can put personal grievances aside for the greater good of the institution.
She also points to the symbolic role held by the King as head of the Church of England, which emphasises forgiveness and reconciliation. In her view, if the royal family cannot overcome its own divisions, it raises questions about how it can represent unity for the wider nation.
The commentator adds that the ongoing controversy surrounding Prince Andrew continues to cast a shadow over the royal household. Allegations linked to Andrew, which he has strongly denied, have prompted ongoing public scrutiny and questions about what other family members may have known.
Against that backdrop, Mackenzie argues that continuing to keep the Duke of Sussex at a distance risks appearing inconsistent. She notes that Andrew, despite facing serious accusations, appeared to be given more opportunities within the family than Harry has received since stepping back from royal duties.
In her view, choosing reconciliation now would not only ease a long-running family dispute but also allow the monarchy to demonstrate leadership and goodwill at a time when public perception matters more than ever.
