Former NBA champion says education about addiction has helped him stay completely sober
Former basketball star Lamar Odom has spoken candidly about his sobriety journey months after being arrested for driving under the influence in Las Vegas.
The two-time NBA champion reflected on his recovery during an appearance on Page Six Radio, explaining that he has committed to living a completely sober life.
“Right now I'm completely sober. I don’t even drink alcohol,” Odom said while discussing his long battle with addiction. He added that learning more about addiction as a disease has played a major role in helping him stay on track.
According to Odom, understanding addiction as a medical condition changed his perspective. He explained that the more he educated himself about the issue, the easier it became to remain sober.
“If you have an addictive mind, the last thing you want to do is feed it any type of drugs,” he noted.
Odom, who was married to reality television star Khloé Kardashian from 2009 to 2016, entered a recovery programme shortly after his January arrest. The 46-year-old spent 30 days at a treatment centre in Los Angeles as part of his efforts to regain control of his life.
Speaking to USA Today in March, he shared an update on his progress, revealing he had reached nearly two months of complete sobriety.
“I am almost 60 days completely sober. No pot, no alcohol,” he said, admitting that giving up marijuana was one of the toughest parts of the process.
Odom’s openness about his recovery marks another step in his ongoing effort to rebuild his life and maintain long-term sobriety.
