Prince William and Catherine Absent as King Charles Visits British Museum with Edward and Duchess Sophie

Monarch previews design for Queen Elizabeth II memorial during royal gathering in London

King Charles and Queen Camilla visited the British Museum to view the final design model for the national memorial honouring Queen Elizabeth II, but Prince William and Catherine were notably absent from the royal outing.

The King was instead joined by his youngest brother, Prince Edward, along with Duchess Sophie and other members of the royal family during the visit.

According to a brief statement released by the royal family, the group gathered at the museum to see a scale model of the memorial that will commemorate the late Queen’s life.

The statement explained that the King and Queen met the memorial’s designer, Lord Norman Foster, as well as three artists who are creating works for the site. The model will remain on display at the British Museum for the public to view.

The tribute will be built in London’s St James’s Park and will overlook The Mall in central London. Its design draws inspiration from a 1955 portrait of the Queen painted when she was 28 by Italian artist Pietro Annigoni.

A short video released alongside the announcement showed Prince Edward, Duchess Sophie and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester accompanying the monarch and his wife during the visit.

Meanwhile, William and Catherine did not attend the museum event.

Earlier, King Charles also paid a heartfelt tribute to his late mother on what would have been her 100th birthday, describing his “darling Mama” as someone who will remain forever in the hearts and prayers of the nation.
