King Charles is said to enjoy getting behind the wheel himself, with a former royal aide revealing the monarch sees driving as a sense of “freedom” and normality.
The King, who is known for paying attention to small details, reportedly prefers driving alone whenever he is not attending official engagements.
Speaking to Select Car Leasing, former royal butler Grant Harrold shared insight into the monarch’s personal driving habits and preferences.
“For the Royal Family, driving is a bit of normality and freedom for them,” Harrold explained, adding that Charles “would often prefer to drive himself than using a chauffeur.”
According to the former aide, the King also had a specific requirement for comfort during journeys.
“He always had a cushion on his seat to support his back. We always had to make sure there was one in there for him,” Harrold said.
The former butler noted that Charles would regularly work during long car journeys but preferred to keep the vehicle spotless.
“He was always working away, especially if it was a long drive,” Harrold shared. “But the King never had snacks in the car as he really doesn’t like mess.”
Harrold also revealed a more relaxed detail about Queen Camilla’s car journeys, saying she frequently travelled with her dogs.
“Queen Camilla in particular was known to always have her dogs in the car,” he said.
“Her car always had loads of hair in the backseat where they sat,” Harrold added.
