Royal aides urged caution after former president’s controversial comments spark concern
King Charles III has been urged to tread carefully during his ongoing visit to the United States, after being drawn into controversy following remarks by Donald Trump.
The monarch, who delivered a notable speech at Capitol Hill highlighting cooperation between the US and its allies, has found himself at the centre of unexpected political attention. The address focused on unity, NATO partnerships and the importance of safeguarding peace and justice worldwide.
However, the trip took a tense turn after Trump claimed the two had shared a brief private conversation. His comments, described as surprising by observers, quickly drew reaction from those following the visit.
Royal commentator Russell Myers criticised the situation, suggesting the moment undermined what had otherwise been a successful diplomatic effort. He noted that Trump’s remarks prompted visible surprise among members of the travelling press.
According to Myers, involving the King in such politically sensitive discussions risks crossing diplomatic boundaries, particularly given the level of neutrality expected from the monarch.
Buckingham Palace responded in measured terms, reiterating that the King remains aligned with the UK government’s long-standing stance on preventing nuclear proliferation, while avoiding direct engagement with the controversy.
Despite the disruption, the visit continues, though the incident has reinforced the delicate balance required in high-level international engagements.
