King Charles Mocked on SNL After Koh-i-Noor Comment Sparks Debate

Comedians take aim at royal visit as Zohran Mamdani’s remark fuels fresh controversy

King Charles III found himself at the centre of late-night humour after Saturday Night Live took a swipe at the ongoing debate surrounding the Koh-i-Noor diamond.

The discussion gained traction when Zohran Mamdani, New York’s mayor, suggested during a recent speech that the historic gem should be returned to India. His comment came as the King was in the United States for a high-profile visit, adding a political edge to the conversation.

“I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond,” Mamdani said, reigniting long-standing arguments about the 105.6-carat jewel’s colonial history.

The topic quickly moved from political discourse into comedy. During the Weekend Update segment, Michael Che delivered a sharp joke, saying he was surprised the King “didn’t take Mamdani back to England with him,” calling him “an Indian treasure.”

His co-host Colin Jost followed up with an even harsher punchline, framing the royal visit as a covert mission to “seek the release of a British hostage being held by an American terrorist,” a clear jab referencing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The satire came just days after the King and Queen Camilla wrapped up their four-day U.S. tour, which coincided with events marking America’s 250th anniversary. The visit was positioned as an effort to strengthen ties between the two countries amid ongoing political tensions.

A royal aide, speaking to the BBC, emphasised that the trip was carried out in support of the government. The official noted that the King’s role was to assist diplomatic efforts, not compete with political leadership, and that the visit had been undertaken at the government’s request.

While the tour aimed to smooth relations, the Koh-i-Noor debate and SNL’s biting humour ensured the visit stayed firmly in the public spotlight.
