Duchess of Sussex says supporting small designers helps tell meaningful stories through style
Meghan Markle is opening up about how fashion plays a deeper role in her life, describing it as a way to express herself while uplifting smaller, local brands.
Speaking to Women’s Weekly Australia, the Duchess of Sussex explained that she makes a conscious effort to wear pieces from local designers, especially when travelling. After returning from her recent visit to Australia, she shared that supporting small businesses is something she actively prioritises.
“Fashion is one of the most powerful industries,” Meghan Markle said. “It shapes how we feel and what we project to others.”
She added that clothing can communicate a message even without words. “You can express so much through what you wear,” she noted, adding that she enjoys showcasing regional craftsmanship wherever she goes.
Meghan Markle also addressed an issue she has noticed over the years, where designers are sometimes miscredited for the outfits she wears. She pointed out that this often happens through affiliate links or media coverage, which she believes is unfair to the original creators.
“Credit where credit is due,” she said, emphasising that many designers put in immense effort and pride into their work. She added that her fashion choices are intentional, made to recognise and support those creators.
