Another year passes without the Sussexes appearing at fashion’s most exclusive event
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were notably absent from the 2026 Met Gala, putting an end to speculation that they might finally step onto fashion’s most talked-about red carpet.
Despite their connections to high-profile figures like Beyoncé, who co-chaired the event, and tennis legend Venus Williams, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not attend the annual fundraiser in New York. The event supports the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute and remains one of the most exclusive nights in global fashion.
Royal appearances at the Met Gala have been rare over the years. Princess Diana made headlines in 1996 when she wore a striking Dior slip dress designed by John Galliano. More recently, Princess Beatrice attended in 2018, marking only the second time a royal stepped onto the iconic Met steps.
While Meghan has yet to make her Met Gala debut, she has spoken openly about her connection to fashion. In a recent interview, the former Suits star described fashion as more than just clothing, calling it a powerful form of self-expression.
She explained that what people wear can communicate a message without words and stressed the importance of giving proper credit to designers. Meghan noted that in the past, designers behind her outfits were sometimes misidentified, something she felt was unfair given the effort and creativity involved.
For her, recognising the right designers is about respect, whether she is supporting a friend, staying loyal to a brand, or simply choosing a look with intention.
