Princess of Wales reportedly avoided discussing royal artwork during one of her first conversations with a journalist
Catherine was cautious and reserved during her early years as a member of the Royal Family, according to an author who recalled one of their first interactions.
Royal author Catherine Mayer shared memories of speaking with the Princess of Wales shortly after she joined the monarchy following her 2011 marriage to Prince William.
Writing for the Daily Mail, Mayer said a later meeting revealed a more relaxed side of Catherine, particularly when discussing her eldest child.
“I remember Catherine chatting to me at a small party for press with her son on her hip,” Mayer wrote. “Though typically guarded, she seemed comfortable talking about him. It made a marked contrast to our first encounter.”
Mayer recalled that during their initial conversation, she tried to break the ice by discussing the artwork displayed around the room. Given Catherine's degree in Art History, the topic appeared to be a natural starting point.
However, Catherine offered little detail when asked which paintings she preferred. According to Mayer, she explained that she had not yet become familiar with the Royal Collection.
When asked about her broader artistic interests, Catherine reportedly replied that she had “varied tastes,” a response Mayer said discouraged further questions and reflected the Princess's cautious approach during her early years in royal life.
