King Charles III has shared an emotional tribute to renowned British artist David Hockney following his death at the age of 88.
In a statement released by the royal family on social media, the King reflected on his personal friendship with Hockney and praised the artist's lasting impact on the world of art.
"My wife and I were greatly saddened to learn of the death of David Hockney O.M., a giant of the world of art and painting, a Yorkshireman through and through and a dear friend and inspiration to so many," the monarch said.
Charles went on to celebrate Hockney's distinctive personality, adding: "David was one of life's true originals; one who wore his genius as lightly as those beloved yellow Crocs of his that helped brighten Palace occasions."
The King also highlighted the artist's enduring legacy, noting that his creativity would continue to inspire future generations through works displayed in galleries and museums around the world.
"I trust they will see him tread safely into the hereafter as we mourn a man whose irrepressible charm, talent and constant innovation will be most sorely missed, but whose dazzling creativity lives on in galleries and museums around the world," he wrote, signing the message, "Charles R."
Hockney, widely regarded as one of Britain's most influential contemporary artists, died peacefully at home on June 11, 2026, just weeks before his 89th birthday. His six-decade career produced some of the most recognisable works in modern art and earned him international acclaim for his innovation and artistic vision.
