Matt Damon Reveals Surprising Method Behind Career-Changing Role Ahead of The Odyssey

Actor says he spent a month working as a bartender to perfect his accent for the film that became his breakthrough

Matt Damon has reflected on the unusual lengths he went to early in his career to prepare for a role that ultimately helped launch him to stardom.

While promoting The Odyssey alongside co-stars Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson, Damon looked back on his experience filming The Rainmaker, directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

The actor revealed that he moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, and worked behind a bar for a month to develop the local accent needed for his character, Rudy Baylor.

“I bartended down in Knoxville, Tennessee to pick up an accent,” Damon said during an interview with GQ, adding that he spent about a month immersing himself in the environment before filming began.

The Oscar winner explained that he approached a bar manager and offered to work at no cost, allowing regular staff to keep any tips while he gained valuable experience interacting with locals.

“I'll give all my tips to these guys, and I just need to be here,” Damon recalled. “If you're serving drinks to people, they talk to you.”

The effort paid off, according to the actor, as The Rainmaker became a major turning point in his career. Damon described the film as “a big break,” noting that the opportunity to star in a Coppola-directed project was invaluable.

Damon will next be seen as Odysseus in The Odyssey, the upcoming epic fantasy action film written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The highly anticipated movie is scheduled for release on July 17, 2026.
